Towards Trust in Automation: Preliminary Discussions
Yuzhu Li
While research about automation has flourished with the recent advancement of digital technologies, the systematic examination of trust in automation in the context of business processes has been scarce. To navigate the literature and fill in this research need, we conducted a review of studies in which trust and automation have been studied. Our preliminary review shows that the definition of trust is consistent across multiple studies. Two of the trust dimensions, reliability and predictability, are widely and consistently examined. Some other trust dimensions are studied, including dependability, process, and purpose. The dominant methodology is experiment in the reviewed articles. Automation stages facilitate the researchers' understanding of how to build trust and learn the dynamics of trust calibration. A few research gaps and a future research plan have been discussed at the end.
