Design Principles for a Digital Assistant for Parkinson’s’ Patients: A Case Study with Clinicians

Parkinson’s disease (PD) presents one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases worldwide, imposing a significant economic burden on the global economy. Clinicians face challenges detecting and treating the disease, relying on discrete observations of its fluctuations. With this background, digital assistants (DAs) can provide more constant tracking and additional supporting elements for the doctors’ decision-making process. Given the rising number of clinicians implementing DAs into their workflow, this study sought to uncover the underlying design principles for developing a DA tailored to Parkinson's patients from physicians' perspective. The findings revealed a validated ontology that enhanced the clinician's decision-making by furnishing additional insights, such as a detailed disease overview and continuous tracking capabilities.
