Lookout Point ahead: VR Station Design for Tacit Knowledge Transfer in the Value Chain
Raphael Palombo, Sebastian Weber, Bjoern Niehaves
Crises, demographic changes, and fluctuations lead to a loss of tacit knowledge in organizations. It still is a challenge to transfer tacit knowledge into explicit organizational knowledge, using IT solutions. Tacit knowledge is stored in individuals and hard to articulate, in contrast with explicit knowledge, that can be easily expressed. Virtual reality (VR) is proposed as a promising tool for tacit knowledge transfer due to its immersive capabilities. However, the effectiveness of VR in supporting tacit knowledge transfer within organizational value chains remains uncertain. Collaborative IT systems have evolved significantly, offering new channels for information exchange. This paper aims to explore the potential of VR technology in supporting tacit knowledge transfer within the value chain, posing a research question regarding effective VR station design.
