Toward Understanding Sustainable Information Systems Degree Programs and Their Brands

The field of Information Systems (IS) has faced many challenges and has evolved over the years since its inception. It has struggles with identity issues and has often been misinterpreted and mistaken with other computing fields. However, IS has been an attractive and a popular degree choice for students. Demand for IS graduates remains strong and the degree has one of the highest average starting salaries among all university degrees (Desjardins, 2018; Dodge, 2018). Buck’s (2015) Sustainability model provides a lens for understanding IS degree programs, especially those positioned to have effective brands. Our preliminary results identify ways to measure a program’s sustainability and to identify IS degree programs whose branding patterns warrant analysis.
