Learning a New Programming Language: An Observational Case Study Exploring the Use of Electroencephalogram (EEG) and Self-Reported Measures
Pruthikrai Mahatanankoon
Computer programming is one of the core essential skills of the information technology (IT) discipline. Proficient programming skills are invaluable to future IT careers. The study explores and evaluates the potential use of an inexpensive wearable electroencephalogram (EEG) to capture attention, cognitive load, and stress while learning a new game programming language. Preliminary data collection reveals different EEG patterns for reading with hands-on exercises and active coding. The findings identify how wearable EEG devices can enhance our understanding of the brain while engaging in computer programming. New insights from the physiological and psychological measures are compared and discussed.
