Beyond Posts and Replies: Unlocking Collective Intelligence in Virtual Communities
Gustavo Stein, Alexandre Graeml
This study examines how discussion forums foster knowledge sharing and problem-solving. Using a netnographic approach, the research examines the interplay between technological features and user participation and the role of collective intelligence in community-driven knowledge construction. The findings reveal that while diverse perspectives enhance discussions, excessive contributions can hinder consensus-building. Effective knowledge sharing is driven by practical solutions that receive higher engagement, emphasizing the role of social recognition. Additionally, trust-building mechanisms, such as expertise validation and reputation systems, play a crucial role in sustaining engagement. The study also highlights that small groups of active users catalyze broader participation, and platform features like topic organization, moderation tools, and gamification enhance collaboration. These insights contribute to the design of more effective virtual communities, though further research is needed to explore long-term impacts and cross-platform comparisons.
