Digital Transformation and Performance Measurement Systems in the Healthcare Sector
Francesco Schiavone, Anna Bastone, Annaluce Mandiello, Federica Zeuli
Inter-organisational networks have been a challenging topic in management literature. Focusing on the healthcare sector, they improve clinical outcomes, cost containment and knowledge sharing. However, the increasing complexity of healthcare systems has led to a shift towards an ecosystem perspective, characterised by decentralised governance and interdependence. Digital ecosystems, driven by technological advances, facilitate real-time information sharing, remote diagnosis and personalised treatments, thereby improving patient outcomes. Despite their potential, these ecosystems require the development of adequate Performance Measurement Systems (PMSs) to ensure efficiency and value maximisation. Based on the existing knowledge, this paper aims to develop a set of propositions to explore how PMSs should be adequately designed to adapt to evolving digital healthcare ecosystems. This study provides theoretical and practical insights into developing PMSs, emphasising a value-based and collaborative approach to healthcare.
