How Might Artificial Intelligence Affect Creativity in Organizations? A Postmodern View
Wenwen Ding, Rajiv Sabherwal
Recent developments in predictive and generative artificial intelligence have redefined the landscape of organizational creativity, challenging the longstanding view that novel ideas emerge solely from human imagination. Drawing on postmodernist thought – particularly the disappearance of subjectivity, the “death of the author,” and the challenge to metanarratives, this paper examines how AI’s postmodern affordances reshape creative processes. We highlight seven critical dimensions: authenticity loss, technological disruption, ethical tensions, capitalist acceleration, cultural fragmentation, the mutual shaping of culture and technology, and emergent complexity. By examining the shift from traditional to postmodern AI affordances, we encourage organizations to reconsider how they foster and sustain creative thinking. This paper invites deeper reflection on AI’s evolving role in creative work and its entanglement with organizational culture.
