The Implications of AI Augmentation in the Workplace: A Cognitive Approach
Anietie Andrew-Essien, Magno Queiroz
This paper examines the cognitive implications of AI augmentation in the workplace, focusing on decision-makers’ cognitive adaptation (i.e., the process through which users adjust their mental models to effectively integrate technology) and cognitive absorption (i.e., a state of deep engagement with and delight in the interactive experience). Grounded in cognitive load and coping theories, we propose that AI augmentation will impact these cognitive outcomes, particularly when tasks are complex. Moreover, we argue that these impacts will vary based on the Big Five personality traits (Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeability, and Neuroticism). We develop a research model and propose an experiment to test a set of hypotheses. Our study will contribute to the to the literature on the cognitive impacts of AI augmentation. For practice, our study will provide insights on the conditions under which AI augmentation hurts or enhances decision makers’ cognitive adaptation and engagement.
