Modelling Agentic Artifact
Julia Cherny
This paper offers conceptual analysis to tackle the problem of modelling with generative action of artifacts. For the new technologies, sensor based and highly autonomous, and also for the ecosystems built with algorithmic management, traditional process modelling has substantial limitations, especially with capturing the flexible contexts and uncertain data. Once we see technology as agentic artifacts - sociotechnical phenomena which contribute to shaping the reality when used - we can apply phenomenological theorising to the modelling process. We suggest the semiotic model based on sociomaterial tradition in Information Systems design and organisational theorizing. Semiotic triangle for the artifact must improve the quality of models and guarantee the holistic problem capture without losing sensitive links in representations. This thorizing should be helpful for future policies and legislations.
