Digital Product Passports in the Transport Sector: An Information Logistics Approach
Carla Lopes, João Barata
Digital product passports (DPPs) are a recent European Union initiative for circular economy. DPPs provide sustainability information to consumers, which will be required to operate in the market. Transportation is one of the critical product supply phases to minimize environmental impacts. However, how DPPs will affect and be affected by this sector of the economy is still unknown. This paper presents the initial steps of a research project aiming to assist the green and digital transformation of logistics with DPPs. Preliminary findings obtained in the context of a 90M€ innovation agenda for the transport sector in Portugal reveal key transportation information to include in the DPP, an assessment of inter-organizational information logistics, and insights on how the transport sector information system must evolve. Our contribution is relevant to international strategies for digital product labeling that address sustainability concerns.
