AI-driven Chatbot Design for Problem-Solving: A Preliminary Study
Dezhi Wu
In this study, we developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based platform embodied with an interactive chatbot, specially designed to guide users through a problem-solving process. Due to the black-box nature of AI algorithms, inspired by scaffolding design principles, we integrated explainable AI with advanced multimodal conversational user interface designs. This resulted in a unique, visually engaging user interface that supports users as they acquire new skills to tackle challenging problems. We conducted preliminary usability testing with ten participants, which provided important design implications on how AI-driven user interfaces could be enhanced with adaptive features including timely hints and prompts, to engage users both cognitively and emotionally in solving complex problems.
