Exploring Consumer mHealth App Categories – Insights from Industry and Academic Literature: A Topic Modeling Approach
Rahul Dwivedi, Deepa Dwivedi
The past decade has seen rapid integration of various mobile health devices and applications into our daily lives. These devices and applications have significantly impacted how we perceive our health and well-being. There is an abundance of mobile health applications available in app stores for various health problems and ample scholarly literature on multiple aspects of such apps. This study aims to compare the categories of consumer mHealth apps available in the marketplace based on their descriptions with the categorization extracted from academic literature. The topic modeling technique compares the types of mHealth apps inherent in the two corpora. The mHealth ecosystem is divided into two broad categories – apps for medical education, community support, intervention, and monitoring for chronic health conditions; and apps for specific medical or health conditions. Differences were found for mHealth app categories addressing health conditions.
