Five Ethical Principles Data Science Students Need to Consider When Creating Infographics

We are increasingly seeing the use of infographics, which are data visualisation tools to communicate complex statistical information. Infographics use visual representations of graphs, charts, and narratives to deliver a key message. While significant study has gone into understanding the design aspects of infographics, there has been less focus on whether created infographics are free of ethical problems and aid ethical decision-making. Our research study addresses the importance of considering 5 ethical principles in infographics. Understanding ethical considerations in infographics, such as harm, benefit, bias, consent, and transparency, is highly important, especially for students studying data science, who are the future creators of infographics. To achieve this end, we provided training in ethical principles to students studying data science to help them identify ethical problems and the consequences of unethical infographics. Our results showed an increase in students' ethical sensitivity to ethical problems in infographics.
