An important avenue for expanding females’ participation in the IT profession is by increasing the number of female students who pursue an IT related major. Adya and Kaiser (2005) proposed a research model that included social, structural, and individual factors as antecedents of females’ IT major choice decisions. However, in our review of the IS literature, we were unable to find an empirical test of Adya and Kaiser’s full model. Accordingly, we designed a survey instrument to assess all of the constructs included in the model and administered it to a sample of 186 college freshmen at a private university in the southern United States. The results indicate that the social factor of role model access and the individual factor of IT self-efficacy both play important roles in students’ IT major choice decisions.
