Deepfakes and Democracy: The Impact of Deepfakes on Voters’ Trust
Shao Chew, Huigang Liang
In the upcoming months, the United States is about to hold a major election for president of the USA. In this period, it's paramount that voters have clear and factual information about the candidate they support. In this age of political polarization and misinformation, deepfakes have already and will be employed to undermine the democratic process by impacting voters' perception of the presidential candidates' trust. Through the lens of cognitive dissonance theory, we develop a research model to explain the impacts of deepfakes towards voter perceptions of trust towards a presidential candidate.
