Quelling the Digital Wildfires of Misinformation: An Integrative Model of Misinformation Management
Peiwei Li, Xinying Liu, Yuhan Hua
Although researchers have demonstrated the capability of detecting and mitigating misinformation, misinformation management has received little theoretical scrutiny, boasts no widely accepted definition in the information systems (IS) discipline, and debates about what we know and don’t know. A review of IS literature reveals that studies examining the misinformation management process are divergent in how they conceptualize vital constructs and their interrelationships. We developed a model of misinformation management based on the Theory of Effective Use that integrates various strands of research into a single framework. We apply the integrative model to synthesize what is known about misinformation management and offer a robust foundation for developing effective management practices. A principal finding is that the proposed misinformation management process can effectively mitigate the adverse effects of misinformation by progressively influencing individuals' inherent cognitive biases. Our analysis provides a blueprint to guide future research and facilitate knowledge accumulation on misinformation management.
