Adoption of Industrial Augmented Reality: A Meta-Analysis
Rami Latreche, Elaine Mosconi, Charles Gouin-Vallerand
This paper investigates the causes behind the slow adoption of augmented reality AR in the industry. Previous research has attributed this to usability and technological maturity issues. We suspect a fit problem between AR functionalities and targeted tasks. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis of user’s studies using AR for industrial support of manual workers, drawing on task-technology fit theories. We analyzed, for 21 experiments, the characteristics of the manufacturing task studied, the AR functionalities used, the participants' demographic characteristics, as well as the adoption measurements collected. We confirmed the relevance of AR for maintenance and assembly tasks. We also found a correlation between these tasks and some AR functionalities. Furthermore, we found that the educational level of manual workers could hinder AR adoption. Finally, we noted that these studies consistently considered only assembly and maintenance tasks and only certain AR functionalities.
