The Role of Artificial Intelligence Technologies in Reducing Physician Burnout
Sagnika Sen, Kaushik Ghosh, Michael Dohan
Physician burnout is a major cause for concern and studies indicate that the trend continues to be on rise, raising serious concerns about safety and viability of the United States (US) healthcare system. In this regard, artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential of reducing physician workload by assisting in various healthcare related tasks and are already being deployed or tested by healthcare providers. We investigate how and to what extent artificial intelligence (AI) technologies can reduce physician workload and the interrelationships among physician, AI technology, and task characteristics in impacting the use of the technology and workload reduction. In this developing research, we present our conceptual framework that integrates two theoretical perspectives – task technology fit and cognitive workload theory.
