The increase of false or misleading information on social media platforms is a known phenomenon, and most people know it. During social crises, disseminating fake content intensifies complicating efforts to discern truth from falsehood. While previous studies have focused on detecting and analyzing the spread of misinformation, there remains a gap in understanding why and how specific governments or their affiliates propagate misinformation during national protests. To address this gap, this study aims to identify different types of misinformation, analyze emotional responses during social crises, and develop a research model to elucidate the organized dissemination of misinformation. Focusing on the Iranian protest in 2022 after the death of Mahsa Amini (a young girl in police custody), Initial findings suggest that factors such as message extremity and strong emotions significantly influence the spread of misinformation, providing valuable insights for further research and intervention strategies.
